Back-to-school family support
Supporting Local Students and Families
Charleston Area, South Carolina
My mother and I recently volunteered at a local school community event that provided families with school supplies, food, snacks, lunchbox items, socks, toiletries, and other everyday essentials.
We helped organize the tables, distribute supplies, and assist families as they selected items they needed. The event showed how practical support can make a meaningful difference for children and parents preparing for the school year.
We did not organize the entire event. We participated as volunteers alongside the school, church, and other community members who helped make the distribution possible.

Why This Type of Support Matters
Back-to-school expenses add up quickly. Families may need notebooks, folders, lunch containers, socks, toothpaste, hygiene products, and food items at the same time.
Community events like this help reduce some of that pressure by making useful items available in one place. They also allow volunteers to see what families are actually requesting instead of assuming what is needed.
What We Took Away From the Experience
The event reinforced the importance of supporting projects that are already connected to the community.
We saw that practical items such as socks, toothbrushes, toothpaste, lunchbox food, and grade-specific school supplies can be just as important as larger donations.
As we continue developing the community side of Thomas & Runtulalo Co., we want to support projects where the needs are clear, the local organizers are trusted, and the resources can be documented responsibly.
Community service starts with showing up, listening, and helping where the need already exists.
